Photo #15: Daw Ei Hla village, Shadaw township (see also photos above). This woman was 60 years old and blind, so when the villagers fled she stayed behind in the village. She fell down in her house and starved to death. Her remains were found like this by a KNPP guerrilla column 1-2 months later. The money visible beside her head was put there by the Karenni soldiers, to help her spirit on its way. [Photo: Karenni sources]

Photos #23-26: Ei Pyin (a.k.a. Naung Kyin), age 19, Karenni refugee at Camp 2 in Thailand. SLORC invaded Thailand to attack the camp on 3 January 1997, killing 3 refugees and wounding at least 9 others. Ei Pyin was hit by shrapnel from a SLORC mortar shell while she ran from her house with her husband, and died shortly afterwards. [Photos: A.M.M. (ABSDF)]
