KHRG Photo Gallery 2007: Attacks and killings
Warning: graphic images
Since late 2005 - early 2006 the SPDC has led an intensified assault on the civilian communities in the three northernmost districts of Karen State. Through this offensive the Army has sought to finally bring these regions and their indigenous populations under military control. To this end, the Army has applied a widespread shoot-on-sight policy in non-SPDC controlled areas, where civilians are targeted as enemies and killed as such. The Army has also applied this policy to anyone caught violating stringent movement restrictions in those areas already under firm SPDC control. Many of those shown below were killed for being caught in the 'free-fire' areas or for having violated SPDC-imposed movement restrictions.

Twenty-year-old Naw H--- of Saw Thay Der village along the Yaw Loh river in Tantabin township, southern Toungoo District shown here on March 21st 2007 severely injured by SPDC mortar fire. Naw H--- had been about to return home from Wa Doh Koh village which lies just under four kilometres to the north. While waiting at Wa Doh Koh village, SPDC soldiers from Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) #501 began shelling the village with high powered mortars. The exploding shells flung shrapnel into Naw H---'s legs, shoulders and head. Despite the severity of her injuries she survived the attacks. [photos: KHRG] |

The bodies of three villagers scattered across a dirt track at Bpla Day in the area of Th'Dah Der village, eastern Lu Thaw township, Papun District as photographed by KHRG field researchers on March 22nd 2007. SPDC soldiers murdered all three of these villagers (each shown in more detail below) at 3:30 pm on March 21st 2007, the day before these photographs were taken. |

The corpse of forty-year-old Saw T'Roh Htaw (photos A-25; A-26; A-27; A-28) of Dtay Thoo Der village murdered by soldiers from SPDC Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) #501 as he was travelling along a dirt road at Bpla Day in Lu Thaw township. In 2006, SPDC forces operating in the area had destroyed the houses and fields of Saw T'Roh Htaw as well as villagers Saw Yeh Gay Baw and Saw Htah Loo. The SPDC's strategy of crop destruction aims to eliminate the civilian presence in non-SPDC-controlled areas of Lu Thaw township by creating severe food shortages. |
As a consequence of these attacks, Saw T'Roh Htaw, Saw Yeh Gay Baw and Saw Htah Loo were forced to seek out alternate food supplies. On March 21st 2007, the three villagers were travelling along the road on a trip to purchase rice when they encountered SPDC soldiers from LIB #501. The soldiers, operating on a shoot-on-site policy, opened fire on the villagers, killing them all. At least three bullet wounds are visible on Saw T'Roh Htaw's back and side. |

The corpse of 38-year-old Saw Htah Loo (photos A-31; A-32), also from Dtay Thoo Der village murdered by SPDC forces along with those shown above. In this part of Lu Thaw township, like all areas of Karen State not under consolidated military control, the SPDC treats civilians as subversive elements, as these people seek to maintain their lives independent of military authority. All civilians in such areas are therefore deemed legitimate targets of military aggression; hunted down, shot on sight and left for dead. [photos: KHRG] |

24-year-old Saw Dtar Hlar Loo of Tantabin township, Toungoo District had been out working in his fields, tending to his rice crop when soldiers from LIB #371, MOC #5 arrived and 'arrested' him. Following this 'arrest' the soldiers tortured and finally executed him on April 15th 2007. The Army follows a shoot-on-sight policy in non-SPDC-controlled areas as well as in areas under military control where the army has imposed stringent movement restrictions. The killing of civilians has increased during the rainy season as villagers must venture out into the open to cultivate their crops where they are more easily spotted by passing soldiers. 19-year-old Saw Pyweh Kloh Htoo, cousin of Saw Dtar Hlar [above] Loo had been attending 9th standard at a school in Mah Ra Moo refugee camp. When the school closed at the start of April for the annual break from studies Saw Pyweh Kloh Htoo returned to his home village in Toungoo District. Having been back just six days SPDC soldiers arrested him for no clear reason, jabbed a knife into his eyes and mouth and then executed him on April 15th 2007 on the same occasions Saw Dtar Hlar Loo was executed. At 3:00 in the afternoon on Friday May 23rd 2007 soldiers from SPDC LIB #88 of LID #78 arrived at the Bpay Baw Dter area of Tantabin township, Toungoo District. Upon reaching the local paddy fields soldiers opened fire on resident villagers at work tending their crops. At this time the soldiers shot and wounded 14-year-old Naw Krih Heh, shown in [photos C-86 and C-87]. The bullet pierced the front of her chest and exited out of her back. |
During this attack the SPDC soldiers shot and killed three villagers and wounded three others, including Naw Krih Heh. Those killed in the attack were 38-year-old Saw Maw Lee Gkeh, 18-year-old Saw Hsa Gkoo Doo and 18-year-old Saw Gkay Gkay. Along with 14-year-old Naw Krih Heh, the SPDC soldiers also injured 34-year-old Saw Naw Htoo [photo C-88] and 22-year-old Naw Tha Lay [photos C-89 and C-90]. The dead and injured villagers were from See Daw Koh village, Tantabin township, Toungoo District. The SPDC has applied a shoot-on-sight policy in order to drive all civilians out of areas which it does not fully control. Those attempting to remain near to their homes and land face the constant threat of military attacks. [Photo: KHRG] |
