KHRG Photo Gallery 2007
KHRG Photo Gallery 2007 presents a selection of 259 photos and 2 video clips received from KHRG field researchers since the start of the year. While most of the photos included in this set cover the period of January to August 2007, some photos from 2006 which were only received at the start of 2007 have also been included for the sake of completeness. This Gallery therefore follows on from those photos included within KHRG Photo Gallery 2006.
The most recently updated photos are all included within the latest releases section and have also been incorporated, along with the rest of the gallery, into the six main thematic sections. The six thematic sections are Forced relocation and forced displacement; Attacks and killings; Health and education; Militarisation and abuse under SPDC control; Landmines and mortars; Army camps, soldiers and convict porters; and Land and livelihoods. Many of these photos - those showing scenes from Toungoo, Nyaunglebin and Papun District - should also be understood as a thematic whole documenting the SPDC's Northern Karen State Offensive against villagers which the Army has continued unceasingly in 2007. New this year to KHRG's Photo Galleries is the inclusion of two short video clips showing scenes of displacement. One of these [B-18] displays the conditions of an IDP site while the other [B-26] shows a column of displaced villagers as they travel through the forest evading SPDC forces and carrying their belonging on their backs.
The contents of these photos show the continuation in 2007 of trends prevalent throughout 2006. SPDC attacks against civilians, destruction of villages and crops and the brutal use of convict porters have all continued unabated. Those communities now living under SPDC control confront pernicious demands for labour, money and supplies which undercut their livelihoods and make it more difficult for them to address health, education and other social needs. In the face of consistent military aggression villagers nevertheless continue to employ various measures to resist abuse and take control of their lives.
KHRG will continue to update the Gallery throughout the year as we receive more photos from the field. As more photos are added we will incorporate them into the relevant thematic sections and update the photos included under the latest releases section. Photos are identified with numerical indicators shown below each image. Identification numbers beginning with 'A' were part of the initial instalment of photos from May 2007, those beginning with 'B' were part of the second instalment of photos from September 2007 and those beginning with 'C' are from the most recent update from November 6th 2007.
All photos are by KHRG except where specifically noted otherwise.
